Drive letters are only 1 character?

Since I created the SUBST drive mapping generator I have been wanting to make drive letters more than one character. I do not think this is possible. It sure would be nice to have ContactManager: in place of Q: OR R:. Is it really true that Windows XP can only have 26 drive mappings?

I defer to the Wizards of the Aggregators to let me know of any solutions to this.

unfortunately this is true. windows can only have a mazimum of 26 drive letters.

However if you wanted to hook up more than 26 drives to windows, this is possible. what you would have to do is disk striping and you could stripe 4 drive as 1 drive letter. this is not recommended because if one drive fails in the stripe, all data is lost.

I too wish Windows would let you name drives anything you'd like, but the letters are probably here to stay for a long time because Microsoft has to support legacy applications and the people who hardcode things like C:\ in them.

They could easily map C:\ to another drive/folder if necessary, so that's just an excuse.

Also, there's actually not much [useful] software that does actually require C: - I had a H: instead of C: for a long time and encounted only a couple of problem apps.

As for SUBSTing, I haven't bothered with that for a while - I put important stuff at the top level (eg: \web), and create batch files linking to commonly used stuff (eg: "go mail"). I find that much nicer to use.
